Lorde Sent Bullied ‘X Factor NZ’ Contestant Cupcakes, Because She’s Wonderful
Lorde knows a thing or two about harsh criticism for her style choices. So it’s kind of touching that the New Zealand native would reach out to one of her own to show support at a time of insanely harsh, public criticism.
Joe Irvine, the X Factor NZ contestant who was bullied onstage by judges Natalia Kills and Willy Moon, tweeted out a photo of a special gift he received from Lorde: a box of cupcakes!
The cupcakes themselves were arranged to spell out “Keep Being Joe,” and came complete with a handwritten note by Lorde, because she’s wonderful like that. In it, she praises him for his positivity in the face of Kills and Moon’s behavior. “I think you’re doing an awesome job on the show so far,” the note reads. “I’m a performer too & I wanted to say that no matter how many people make fun of me for how I dress, move & act, I’m being me — and that’s what’s important.”

Irvine has received an influx of support from both fans and celebrities alike over the past several days. Television network TV3 stood by Irvine and fired Kills and Moon for their actions, while Ed Sheeran tweeted out his own words of encouragement to the finalist. Kills and Moon have been at the center of a media firestorm, as they’ve now left New Zealand altogether in an attempt to distance themselves from what could possibly be a career-killing move for both of them. Even if it isn’t a career-killer, it was certainly pointless. Unless Kills and Moon subscribe to the theory that there’s no such thing as bad press. Either way, I think it’s wonderful that Lorde, Ed Sheeran, and all these people across the world are reaching out to Joe. He didn’t deserve what happened to him on that stage, and he’s shown real class in how he’s handled it all. I don’t know if he’ll win The X Factor New Zealand off of this publicity, but Joe is a hard guy not to root for right now.
