Laverne Cox Cast as Transgender Attorney in CBS Pilot

Laverne Cox was the first transgender Emmy nominee in history for her role as Sophia on Orange Is the New Black on Netflix. But now, she’s looking to cross over into network television.

Cox will star in the upcoming CBS pilot Doubt, playing the role of Cameron Wirth, “a fierce and funny, competitive and compassionate transgender Ivy League-educated attorney.” The character description continues, “The fact that she’s experienced injustice first hand makes her fight all the harder for her clients.”

If the pilot is picked up to series, this will make Cox the first transgender series regular character on broadcast television to actually be played by a transgender actor. In essence, Cox could break new ground with the role, without even getting into how good she’s likely to be in the part. She’s a real talent, and this could be a summit role for her, allowing her to expand beyond the role of Sophia from Orange Is the New Black. I suppose we’ll find out soon enough whether or not Doubt can secure itself a spot on next season’s schedule for CBS.
