‘Jem and the Holograms’ Adaptation May Be Lacking in Holograms (PHOTOS)

When heard they were making an adaption of the brightly-colored 80s cartoon Jem, we were expecting something more totally totally outrageous than these newly released movie stills suggest.

(Although to be fair, photos of the band in their glam rock outfits — complete with keytars — are pretty on point.)

Equally worrisome? Jem and the Holograms is not necessarily being made for fans of the original series, but is more of a “new coming-of-age origin story for the YouTube generation.”

Also based on what we’ve read, possibly without holograms and magic earrings.

Explained director Jon M. Chu, “How can you even have a secret identity with all this social media? But then it dawned on us: Wait, everybody has a secret identity. The idea of ‘Who are you really?’ is more relevant today than ever.”
