Jamie Brewer Becomes First Model With Down Syndrome to Walk Fashion Week Runway (VIDEO)
Jamie Brewer has made New York Fashion Week history!
The actress, who has appeared in three seasons of American Horror Story on FX, became the first model with Down Syndrome to walk the runway at New York Fashion Week in yesterday’s Role Models Not Runway Models show from designer Carrie Hammer. Brewer was styled with a look inspired by her the witch Nan, her character from American Horror Story: Coven, but her confidence and energy moved far beyond that role.
Hammer gushed about Brewer in an interview with USA Today: “We feature incredible influential women on the runaway. CEOs, executives, activist, actresses, anyone who is the top of the field, top of their game,” Hammer said, before adding, “Jamie is an absolute star.”
Brewer’s dress made for a striking visual on the runway with its signature A-line cut, intended to accentuate Brewer’s figure. Hammer detailed the thought process behind the decision to place Brewer in the black dress.
“Jamie has this beautiful figure with a small waist,” Hammer said about the design of Brewer’s outfit. “A-lines really compliment that.”
For her part, Brewer was excited to hit the runway.
“It’s amazing, it’s really neat,” said Brewer in an interview with TODAY. “Many women have many sides to their personality, this dress fits…mine,” she says. “I am honored to be in it.”
Congratulations to Brewer on her inspiring, history-making walk on the runway, and kudos to Hammer for giving her the shot. Check out the video of Brewer’s historic Fashion Week debut below:
