James Bond Author Apologizes for Calling Idris Elba ‘Too Street’ for Role

Writer Anthony Horowitz — who pens the James Bond novels — is sorry for saying that actor Idris Elba is “too street” to play the role of the English spy.

After giving an interview to the Daily Mail (via USA Today) about persistent casting rumors, Horowitz responded by explaining why he didn’t think Elba was the right fit for Bond.

Idris Elba is a terrific actor, but I can think of other black actors who would do it better. For me, Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part. It’s not a colour issue. I think he is probably a bit too “street” for Bond. Is it a question of being suave? Yeah.

Responding to the internet backlash surrounding his commentary (which isn’t as bad as what Rush Limbaugh said about the rumor last year), Horowitz took to Twitter to apologize.
