Is ‘So You Think You Can Dance Junior’ In the Works?
FOX has yet to confirm that a 13th season of So You Think You Can Dance is on the way, but the network is reportedly coming down to the wire on plans for a renewal — with a pretty big twist planned.
Apparently, the prevailing rumor is that the show will return for Season 13, but will follow in the footsteps of the MasterChef franchise by having a season centered on younger dancers. In short, So You Think You Can Dance Junior just might be on the way, according to what Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva has heard from her sources.
“We would see some changes — how significant you perceive them to be is up to you,” said Fox chairman Dana Walden at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour. “It won’t fundamentally change the show, it will just give it a little bit of spin.”
A picture of a poster advertising a discussion with SYTYCD executive producer Jeff Thacker circulated on Instagram, adding further fuel to the likelihood of a Juniors season:
Whether or not FOX goes through with So You Think You Can Dance Junior, the network is still primed to have dancing on the schedule, as FOX is planning a couples dancing competition from Stijn Bakkers, a former producer on The Voice. So this should be an interesting summer for FOX, provided they can get all their ducks in a row with their schedule.
Call me crazy, but I think a juniors season of SYTYCD could give the show a real shot in the arm, ratings-wise. If nothing else, it should add a layer of novelty to the series that could make it feel fairly fresh. Granted, I would imagine a lot of people will hate this development, and there’s always the question of whether or not children should be subjected to this sort of pressure. But I think it could be a fun season.
