‘Independence Day 2’ Casts Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher
So it’s looking like Independence Day 2 is going with a story centered on the next generation of the characters from the first film.
Survivor’s Remorse star Jessie Usher has been cast as the son of Will Smith’s Captain Steven Hiller, which appears to be the studio’s attempt to make up for the distinct lack of any Will Smith in this movie. Meanwhile, Liam Hemsworth is also joining the cast, with rumors suggesting he’ll be playing the nephew of Bill Pullman’s President Thomas J. Whitmore. It’s unknown at this point if Pullman will actually return or not, but it really couldn’t hurt to have someone presidential hanging around.
But while Pullman’s return is uncertain, another actor from the original film is definitely coming back: Jeff Goldblum has been confirmed for the sequel, reprising his role as David Levinson. The news was broken by director Roland Emmerich, who seems as eager to get this ball rolling as audiences are to see it, even if you could still argue that this sequel is 20 years too late.

Of course, the next generation approach seems kind of random: why Will Smith’s son and not his stepdaughter from the first movie? Why the president’s nephew and not his daughter? It just seems like a strange approach for the story to take, considering there are already pre-established characters who could fill those roles, and I like the notion of a female-led Independence Day movie better than an attempt to recreate Will Smith’s aura from the first. But the movie will likely do big business anyway, even with the 20-year wait (or maybe because of the 20-year wait).
Independence Day 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on (when else?) July 4, 2016.
