Ian McShane Joins ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 6 In Mystery Role

Game of Thrones is adding one of the most beloved stars of HBO’s past for Season 6. But what character will he play?

Ian McShane has joined the cast of Game of Thrones Season 6 in a mystery role that features minimal screentime, but a key effect on the overall plot.

Naturally, this marks McShane’s return to HBO after his role on the critically-acclaimed Deadwood, for which he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Al Swearengen. Production has already started on Season 6 to ensure it meets its Spring 2016 airdate. However, there is plenty of fun speculation to fill the offseason, such as the fate of a certain character who died in the Season 5 finale, or the possibility of the show running beyond seven seasons.

As for McShane, he strikes me as the type of guy who’d play a perfect Randyll Tarly, the father of Sam Tarly. Then again, I could also see him as one of the Iron Islanders, perhaps Victarion or Euron Greyjoy, maybe? So much hype for Season 6, I can hardly contain myself! McShane joining the cast is my favorite bit of casting news since Alexander Siddig was announced for Doran Martell last season. Here’s hoping the show doesn’t waste McShane like they’ve wasted Siddig so far. If nothing else, I’m confident that Season 6 is going to be one for the ages.
