HBO Renews ‘Ballers’ For Second Season

“The Rock” just keeps on rolling! Yes, Dwayne Johnson is apparently as big a deal on TV as he is on the big screen.

Less than a month after its premiere, HBO has renewed The Rock’s comedy series Ballers for a second season.

Created by Stephen Levinson, Ballers follows the story of a retired football player (played by Johnson) who’s changed careers to become a financial advisor. The premiere raked in a stunning 8.3 million viewers, so yeah, this isn’t exactly a huge surprise, as HBO continues to shore up its summer lineup.

Granted, you could probably argue whether or not — or to what degree — this is a comedy. But The Rock’s natural charisma carries this show pretty far. And Rob Corddry is a pleasant surprise, offering some of the show’s genuine laughs. It’s looking like the show is building a following, even if it hasn’t necessarily been a critical darling. This second season renewal, however, shows that HBO has faith in Ballers, at least. Here’s hoping Ballers sticks around for a while.
