"Glee" star Naya Rivera went missing on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at Lake Piru in Ventura County, CA. Her 4-year-old son was found sleeping alone on a boat at 6 p.m. and was drifting for about 3 hours.
Authorities searched the lake yesterday but this morning they made it official: Naya Rivera is presumed dead. The search is a recovery mission.
Lake Piru is a reservoir in the Los Padres National Forest and Topatopa Mountains of Ventura County.
8:32 AM PT -- Authorities have just made it clear -- Naya is presumed dead and the search has now shifted from a rescue to a recovery mission. She went missing in water with only 5 to 9 inches of visibility, and authorities say the lake is filled with trees and debris on the bottom. Law enforcement says it typically takes 7 to 10 days for a body to rise to the surface.
UPDATE Via Daily Beast on July 14, 2020:
Former Glee star Naya Rivera died of accidental drowning, the Ventura County Medical Examiner ruled in an autopsy released Tuesday. Rivera’s body was discovered over the weekend in Lake Piru in Southern California. She and her 4-year-old son had gone boating last week, but he was found alone in the boat afterwards. After a multi-day search impeded by poor visibility conditions in the lake, Rivera’s body was recovered. “The autopsy findings are consistent with a drowning and the condition of the body is consistent with the time that she was submerged. No traumatic injuries or disease processes were identified at autopsy,” the coroner wrote.
