'GoldenEye 007' officially comes to Xbox and Nintendo Switch

“GoldenEye 007” which was originally released on the Nintendo 64 twenty-five years ago, is coming to the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

The game arrives via Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members and the Xbox Game Pass, which I think is a massive win for the subscribers of both those platforms.

Rare Ltd, Microsoft and Nintendo made the announcement on Tuesday. The game will come with new enhancements including online gameplay, achievements, 4K resolution and smoother framerate.

Online gameplay will only be available on the Nintendo Switch version, as explained in this interesting tidbit from The Verge:

“Microsoft confirmed the lack of online multiplayer mode on Xbox in a statement, and it appears to be because the Xbox and Nintendo Switch versions are actually different. Nintendo appears to be using the original game, whereas Microsoft says it has made a “faithful recreation” of GoldenEye 007.”

I am assuming that “faithful recreation” is running the original source code through a translator of some sort or skinning another game engine. Will it actually “play” like the original game then? That’s something to strongly consider.

Nevertheless, I am excited for this, even if there’s been no date announced yet.

It’s coming. We can start dreaming now.
