‘Game of Thrones’ Star Maisie Williams in Talks for ‘The Last of Us’ Movie

Is Arya Stark humanity’s last hope?

Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams is in talks to play the lead role of Ellie in the big-screen adaptation of Naughty Dog’s masterpiece Playstation 3 game The Last of Us, according to Buzzfeed’s Adam Vary, who was present for the Screen Gems panel at San Diego Comic-Con:

Initially announced in March, The Last of Us is in the early stages of development with Sam Raimi onboard to produce, and Naughty Dog creative director/writer Neil Druckmann writing the script. The story is said to diverge from the narrative of the game, although to what extent is unknown. Druckmann reportedly wanted the film to have a different ending than the game’s divisive finale, but Raimi convinced him to leave things unchanged, which is really the better way to go on this, in my opinion. Still, while he might not be able to have the ending he wants, Druckmann states that Naughty Dog has final approval on both casting and directing for the film.

Of course, for many fans, even a wonderful actress like Williams won’t be able to compare with Ashley Johnson, the actress who voiced Ellie in the original game, which centers on a post-apocalyptic United States ravaged by an infection that has transformed humans into zombie-like creatures identified by face-sprouting fungus (it’s the very definition of Nightmare Fuel). Druckmann, however, is still intent on finding a way to get both Johnson and Troy Baker — who voices Joel, the man tasked with escorting the infection-immune Ellie across the U.S. to scientists who might be able to synthesize a cure — into the film:

This is the second film adaptation of a Naughty Dog game to make headlines this week after Sony announced a release date for the long-awaited Uncharted movie. That said, of the two, I’m a thousand times more jazzed for The Last of Us, even if Uncharted is far more suited to the big screen than the “likely going to screw it up” narrative of The Last of Us.
