This is an abbreviated recap of Game of Thrones Season 4 Episode 2 ‘The Lion and Rose’ on HBO. This episode was super major and I will only discuss the end.
Synopsis: Tyrion lends Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) a hand. Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) and Margaery (Natalie Dormer) host a breakfast. At Dragonstone, Stannis (Stephen Dillane) loses patience with Davos (Liam Cunningham). Ramsay (Iwan Rheon) finds a purpose for his pet. North of the Wall, Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) sees where they must go.
Previously on Game of Thrones
Joffrey Baratheon is brutal, this is a given, but he is also enabled. Enabled by his mother Cersei, despite Joffrey’s disdain for her, enabled by his grandfather, Tywin, despite his disdain for him.
He is their proxy for their own sadistic desires and it’s no surprise that when Joffrey’s sick sense of humor played out in the open during the wedding reception, they were the only ones (and Joffrey’s brother Tommen) who truly enjoyed themselves while the rest of the family members at the table had a look of disgust. It was a very stark contrast but we should not forget why they gathered there in the first place: their common lust for power. Power symbolized by this boy king who had no sense of right or wrong, who’s only desire is to wield it. He is the embodiment of power corrupted.
Joffrey’s sole purpose for the festivities was to humiliate Tyrion. He taunted him and asked him to be his cup bearer. Margaery attempted to break things up and only succeeded when the giant pie arrived.
Ah yes, a giant pie. Who could resist a giant pie? Not even Joffrey Baratheon.
He sliced it with his new Valryian sword, and ate it. Only the King of Westeros can have his pie and eat it too.
He ordered Tyrion to hand him some wine to wash down his meal. And this sadly would be his one final act of power.
Joffrey started to choke. Then fell to the ground. It looked like he was poisoned. Cersei and Jaime come rushing to his side (his biological parents) but it was too late.
Joffrey Baratheon finally fulfilled his one good act as king: giving us the most satisfying face of death this series has ever seen.
This is the consummate bad guy, the character everyone loves to hate, finally getting what we think he deserves.
