‘Game of Thrones’ Casts ‘Downton Abbey’ Star for Season 6 Mystery Role
One of the most recognizable TV actors in the UK is joining Game of Thrones for Season 6 in a mystery role.
The versatile Richard E. Grant is joining the cast of Game of Thrones, as part of a cast of newcomers for Season 6 that includes Deadwood‘s Ian McShane, Oscar nominee Max von Sydow as the new Three-Eyed Raven, Lucy star Pilou Asbæk as Euron Greyjoy (uncle to Theon), and UnREAL alum Freddie Stroma as Dickon Tarly (brother to Samwell). Unfortunately, no details have been revealed about Grant’s role (or maybe it’s fortunate, if you want to stay completely unspoiled about the new season). Honestly, I’m not even particularly sure who he’d play. Maybe one of the various Northern lords set to join the story this season? Maybe the elusive, mysterious, legendary Howland Reed? A new role invented for the show that isn’t in the books? More than just about any other casting so far, this is the one that has me scratching my head (in a good way).
Naturally, Grant is no stranger to high profile TV gigs. Just last season, he had a major arc on Downton Abbey, playing a character who finds himself initiating an attempted infidelity with one of the series leads. But even without Downton Abbey, he’s sure to be familiar to viewers of American and British telly alike, as he’s been featured on HBO’s Girls and BBC’s Doctor Who.
