Final Box Office: ‘The Conjuring 2’ Scares Up $40.4 Million To Take No. 1
The final box office results are in for this weekend, and it was an easy win for The Conjuring 2, as the horror sequel earned $40.4 million to come in at No. 1. This was enough to put it ahead of the weekend’s other two big newcomers, Now You See Me 2 and Warcraft.
Although non-Captain America sequels haven’t exactly been doing great this year, The Conjuring 2 is proving to be an exception to the rule, scoring the biggest horror opening in the history of a June, and the biggest since the first Conjuring film, which took in $41.9 million back in 2013. That first film in the franchise was similarly underestimated, which begs the question of when horror movies will stop being overlooked as a dependable draw at the cinemas. Most constitute smaller budgetary investments than your average blockbuster, and have the potential to yield better returns when they’re successful. Sure, The Conjuring franchise isn’t going to break $1 billion, but the movie matched its own $40 million budget in a single weekend, and scored the No. 1 spot over far more heavily promoted movies in the process. It’s proof that, at the very least, the summer season isn’t horrorproof, even if this year’s disappointing returns is starting to suggest it might be sequelproof. The again, between this and the likely success of next weekend’s Finding Dory, who knows? Sequels might not actually be in such steep decline after all.
For one, despite coming in at No. 2, Legendary and Universal’s Warcraft was an unmitigated disaster in the U.S., earning only $24.4 million against a massive budget of $160 million. However, there’s actually good news here to outweigh the bad: the movie is apparently a massive hit overseas. Not only did the movie deliver the biggest opening of all-time for a foreign film with $156 million, it raked in a non-China foreign gross of $105.7 million. As we reported yesterday, Warcraft has already outgrossed Star Wars: The Force Awakens in China, and has overtaken Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time as the most successful video game movie adaptation of all-time. That’s remarkable for a game that’s been around, in one form or another, since Justin Bieber was in diapers.
Sliding into the No. 3 spot was Now You See Me 2, which earned a respectable $23 million. This is a movie that will likely need strong word-of-mouth to carry it, since this isn’t exactly the type of franchise that compels viewers to buy tickets on opening day, mostly because it isn’t the kind of spectacle that demands to be seen on the big screen. Needless to say, Now You See Me 2 has a long way to go to recoup its $90 million budget. Still, it had a better weekend than last weekend’s No. 1, as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows tumbled to No. 3 with $14.8 million. Rounding out the Top 5, X-Men: Apocalypse earned $10 million in its third weekend, as the expected box office juggernaut continues to decline.
