Felicity Jones Joins ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff as Female Lead

Oscar nominee Felicity Jones is heading to a galaxy far, far away.

The actress has reportedly been cast as the female lead in the upcoming Star Wars stand-alone spinoff film, from director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) and writer Chris Weitz (About a Boy).

Reportedly, Jones beat out a talented field of actresses for the mysterious role, including Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany, and Oscar nominee Rooney Mara. Not a whole lot is known about the movie beyond rumors that Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul and Wrath of the Titans star Edgar Ramirez are the frontrunners for the male lead.

The untitled movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 16, 2016, so shooting should begin fairly soon on the project. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll learn any more about the film than the crazy amounts of nothing we know already, given how closely guarded Star Wars films tend to be, from pre-production through filming and all the way to release. But that’s kind of what I love about the series, the not knowing. Jones is a wonderful actress whose praises I’ve been singing since Like Crazy in 2011. It’s great to see her finally break through.
