Ex-WWE Star Dave Bautista Responds To Meryl Streep MMA Diss

Former WWE star Dave Bautista briefly pursued MMA following his departure from pro wrestling, as part of a bucket list pursuit. He won his sole fight in the sport, and continues to follow MMA enthusiastically. Hence, he had a bit of an issue with Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes speech.

In accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award, Streep made the shortsighted comment that “If we kick [all the foreigners] out you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.” This pretty much ignores that many of the current champions in the UFC are foreigners, such as Amanda Nunes, Jose Aldo, Conor McGregor, Michael Bisping and Joanna Jedrzejczyk, to say nothing of how many cards are headlined by non-Americans each year. Hell, the next UFC card features an American fighting a Dutch kickboxer. But I digress, as Bautista makes much the same point in a classy pair of tweets about Streep’s speech.

Ultimately, I think this was a really classy way to respectfully disagree, short of inviting Streep to a show like Bellator did. I imagine this will all blow over pretty quickly, as it does any time a celebrity makes a misinformed comment. But I kind of like that the response towards Streep has been less about vitriol and more about finding a way to include her, so she can get a better perspective on the diversity of MMA, which rivals that of many other popular sports in America right now.

But what do you think about what Bautista had to say? What about Streep’s remark? Sound off in the comments!
