Empire’s Gabourey Sidibe Stuns in Issey Miyake (PHOTOS)
Check out these stunning photos of Gabourey Sidibe wearing a saffron-colored Issey Miyake “Pleats Please” dress in a recent feature from the set of “Empire” in Chicago. She looks so good!
The Chicago Tribune interviewed Gabourey on her acting career, body image, fashion and what’s coming up for her (she’s writing a memoir).
This answer was one of my favorites:
Q: You’ve spoken about deciding for yourself that you too are beautiful despite an industry that says otherwise. What advice would you give to young black women who struggle with the mainstream’s constant portrayal of a beauty standard that doesn’t include them?
A: Look, I’m from Brooklyn, New York. All my family are dark-skinned people. My dad is African. My mom is from Georgia. And both my parents are dark. All my family is dark-skinned. And we’re all kind of bigger people. And I think that my mom is beautiful, and I think that my dad’s skin color is beautiful. And so I cannot look at the two of them and decide that I am not beautiful, because I see who’s on the cover of People Magazine or because I see who is on TV and all of these reality shows and stuff. I can’t decide that they’re beautiful and I’m not. You can’t decide it for me. And I think you just have to be the one to decide what is beautiful.
