Emma Watson Cast as Belle in Disney’s Live-Action ‘Beauty and the Beast’
Disney’s upcoming live-action Beauty and the Beast has found its Belle!
Emma Watson took to Facebook to announce that she has been cast in the remake of the 1991 animated classic, the first animated film to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. She was positively giddy to announce the news, saying, “My six year old self is on the ceiling – heart bursting.”
Of course, some might be a bit concerned by the sentence that follows, as Watson declares: “Time to start some singing lessons.” Naturally, this is a singing-intensive role, and Watson is a bit unproven, in that respect. But I’m sure she wouldn’t have been cast if Disney didn’t anticipate she could pull it off, at least with some hard work over the coming months.
Twilight Saga and Dreamgirls director Bill Condon will helm the film from a script by Stephen Chbosky, the author of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, a film for which Watson earned raves. No release date is set just yet, but I’d imagine if March’s live-action Cinderella is a hit, Disney might try and put a rush on this one. Either way, I’m interested to see how this turns out, since Beauty and the Beast is my favorite animated movie of all-time, and one of Disney’s best.
