Elon Musk Confirms Tesla Automotive Glass Division
Tesla Motors is getting into the glass business: Elon Musk confirmed that the company is going to begin manufacturing in-house automotive glass.
According to statements from Musk, this new automotive glass division will look to use several existing methods and techniques, while tailoring them to the specific demands of a Tesla vehicle. Former Apple Senior Materials Engineer Mike Pilliod will head the new division alongside Tesla Program Manager Kate Kuzina.
“It is using a lot of techniques used in automotive glass business,” Musk stated. “In case it wasn’t obvious with the announcement, Tesla has created a glass technology group – with some really phenomenal people.”
Musk would go on to add that we’ll see Tesla glass in use on Tesla vehicles as early as the upcoming Model 3. And it makes sense, as the Model 3 will feature a roof made of two large panes of glass, in what feels like the next step up from the Model X’s panoramic windshield. I’m not sure how the public will respond, but hey, it should at least look cool. And if Tesla can sell people on the strength of their glass, then it’s all the better for the company, especially considering the significant drop in sales they suffered for the month of October. Any good press helps for the automotive division.
