Drea de Matteo joins ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’

An Emmy-winning star of The Sopranos and Sons of Anarchy alum is headed to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

Drea de Matteo has been cast in the series as Karla Faye Gideon. The press release describes Karla as “a Gifted woman with a grudge to bear against S.H.I.E.L.D. who joins forces with Skye’s father, Cal.”

Naturally, this brings up the question of whether the character is being introduced on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in order to transition her into Netflix’s upcoming Daredevil series, since Karla Faye Gideon is a character from the Daredevil comics. If so, it presumably wouldn’t be a huge role, since she only enters into the story following the death of her young son Bradley, later becoming a victim of domestic abuse whom Daredevil must rescue. Granted, it’s hard to tell if/how that story would fit into the narrative here, unless they’re going with an entirely new interpretation of the character. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time the show did as much, since Skye (Chloe Bennet) was revealed to be Daisy “Quake” Johnson in the winter finale.

Matteo joins a roster of guest stars for the second half of season two that includes Thor star Jaimie Alexander and The Tomorrow People alum Luke Mitchell, making this a stacked back-half of the season. Drea de Matteo is an outstanding talent in her own right, and should make for a fine addition to the cast, even if just for a short arc.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns Tuesday, March 3 on ABC.
