Dr. Oz Accepts Daytime Emmy for No-Shows Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan
Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan were no-shows at the 2016 Daytime Emmy Awards, which were, once again, untelevised. So when they won the Emmy for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host, it fell to another Emmy winner to fill in.
When the award was announced, presenter Dr. Oz, who won an Emmy himself for Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host, accepted the honor on their behalf.
“I don’t think they’re here,” Oz said. “I will accept on their behalf – and Kelly and Michael will share it!”
Needless to say, it’s probably going to be awkward for Kelly and Michael to share custody of an Emmy, considering they haven’t exactly been getting along. Ever since Michael announced he’d be leaving Live! With Kelly and Michael to take a full-time role on Good Morning America, relations have been frosty on the daytime talk show. First, Kelly no-showed the first post-announcement episode in protest, which prompted Dancing With the Stars celeb Erin Andrews to fill in for the absentee co-host.
After some really tense talks with ABC, Kelly was talked into returning to the show. In her first episode back, Kelly stated that all the drama at least opened up a dialogue about “respect in the workplace”. After all, Kelly felt it was disrespectful of both Michael and the network not to give her a heads up that her co-host would be leaving the show. But it all seems like water under the bridge now.
As for the Emmys, Kelly at least has a good reason for missing the show. Sunday marked her 20th wedding anniversary to husband Mark Consuelos, so it’s likely they were out having an anniversary celebration, or maybe even just spending a night in together. No idea what Michael was up to, but I’d imagine he’s a busy man himself. But hey, congratulations to both Kelly and Michael on their big Emmy win!
