Donald Trump Runs Incendiary Anti-Immigrant Ad in South Carolina
Donald Trump is running an incendiary anti-immigrant ad in South Carolina, abandoning his plan to run positive ads there, reports the New York Times.
The ad focuses on the 2008 murder of a teenage athlete in Los Angeles by an immigrant gang member living in the United States without legal permission. It features Jamiel Shaw Sr., the teenager’s father, supporting Mr. Trump:
Mr. Shaw’s son, Jamiel Jr., 17, known as Jas, was shot dead by an illegal immigrant who, prosecutors said, mistook Jamiel for being a member of an opposing gang because of the color of his backpack. The immigrant, Pedro Espinoza, was convicted and sentenced to death in 2012.
The ad is overtly racial, not mentioning the nationality or background of the man convicted in the 2008 killing.
The South Carolina Republican primary is on February 20.
