Donald Trump Offered Chris Christie VP Spot But Rescinded – Report
Donald Trump offered the Republican VP running-mate spot to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie – but then rescinded it, according to sources of the NY Post.
According to the paper, Trump had not made a decision on his VP one week from the GOP convention in July. Apparently, Trump made an offer to Christie on July 12 but on July 13, his then campaign chair Paul Manafort arranged a meeting with Gov. Mike Pence. Manafort told Trump that his plane had mechanical trouble so Trump was forced to stay in Indianapolis for one more day. Trump’s advisers were then able to convince him to choose Pence over Christie.
The Post adds:
Trump agreed to name Pence the next day and broke the news to Christie, saying it would “tear my family apart if I gave you VP,” a source said.
Christie acknowledged to MSNBC that Trump’s decision bothered him. “If you’re a competitive person, like I am, and you’re used to winning, like I am — again, you don’t like coming in second, ever,” Christie said.
A Christie aide said it was “completely wrong” that Trump offered the job to the governor.
Oh what could have been! Amazingly, Paul Manafort left the Donald Trump campaign weeks after the GOP convention.
