Donald Trump lied about Google creating a nationwide coronavirus screening website today during a White House press briefing. Google made the correction shorty after Trump made the announcement.
Donald Trump said via Verge:
“Google is going to develop a website — it’s going to be very quickly done, unlike websites of the past — to determine if a test is warranted and to facilitate testing at a nearby convenient location. We have many, many locations behind us, by the way. We cover this country and large parts of the world, by the way. We’re not gonna be talking about the world right now, but we cover very, very strongly our country. Stores in virtually every location. Google has 1,700 engineers working on this right now. They have made tremendous progress.”
Another company under Google's parent company Alphabet called Verily is creating a coronavirus related website. It is not a nationwide site and only for people in the Bay Area. The site is meant to help people in the Bay Area find places where they can be tested - and only for healthcare workers. It is far from being "ready". So... it is literally nothing like what Donald Trump said it would be. The White House even presented a flowchart!
Does Donald Trump have dementia? He announced something that doesn't and will not exist when so many lives are at risk. We're doomed!
Statement from Verily: "We are developing a tool to help triage individuals for Covid-19 testing. Verily is in the early stages of development, and planning to roll testing out in the Bay Area, with the hope of expanding more broadly over time.— Google Communications (@Google_Comms) March 13, 2020
