Donald Glover Will Play Lando Calrissian In Young Han Solo Movie
Well, it’s official: the Young Han Solo movie due to arrive in 2018 has officially found its young Lando Calrissian. Donald Glover, the former Community star and creator of FX’s Atlanta, has landed the role in the Star Wars spinoff.
The news was officially announced on the Star Wars Twitter page:

I’m excited, although I worry about the response this is going to get, considering the movie is already pretty divisive. Of course, I say “divisive” because there are still a fair share of fans who feel this movie shouldn’t even be happening in the first place, due in large part to the belief that Han Solo and Lando Calrissian are too inextricably linked to the performances of Harrison Ford and Billy Dee Williams, respectively. Alden Ehrenreich is a bit of a question mark as Han Solo, since it’s hard to imagine what his Ford impersonation would be like. But reaction online is already mixed to news of Glover’s casting. Sure, he’s got the look, but can he do the voice? Can he embody that effortless Lando swagger?
For what it’s worth, I think he could pull it off easily. As rapper Childish Gambino, Glover knows a thing or two about swagger, to say nothing of his relative effortlessness as a comedian. I think he’s a solid choice for the role, although I worry it’ll be hard to see Lando up there rather than Donald Glover. I suppose we’ll see once the first images start to be released in the coming year. If nothing else, I’m optimistic since Phil Lord and Chris Miller haven’t really let me down yet with the films they’ve directed, and the involvement of Empire Strikes Back writer Lawrence Kasdan and son Jon tells me they have a story they really want to tell that will justify this entire project. Maybe that’s naive, but as a Star Wars nut, I’m totally on-board.
