‘Doctor Who’ Season 9: Premiere Episode Titles + Returning Guest Stars Revealed
Doctor Who won’t be back until later this year, but the first new details are coming in for Season 9, as episode titles and returning guest stars have been revealed by BBC.
Perhaps the most relevant tidbit revealed is that the season premiere will be a two-parter. The two episodes are titled “The Magician’s Apprentice” and “The Witch’s Familiar,” respectively. Both are written by Steven Moffat and directed by Hettie MacDonald, the helmer who directed the wonderful Season 3 episode “Blink”.
Another big reveal is that Missy/The Master will be back, despite having apparently been killed off in the Season 8 finale. Of course, this probably shouldn’t be much of a surprise, since there’s yet to be a version of The Master who’s actually remained dead. The big bonus here, however, is that Michelle Gomez will get to reprise her role, as she was one of the most welcome additions to last season. I think she even outranks John Simm’s manic, volatile portrayal of The Master from David Tennant’s run on Doctor Who. She just seems to luxuriate in The Master’s ridiculous villainy in a way not seen since Anthony Ainley played the part in the 1980s.
“Everybody hide – Michelle Gomez as Missy was an instant hit last year, so she’s straight back to plague the Doctor and Clara in the series opener,” said Steven Moffat. “But what brings her back into their lives is the last thing they’d expect.”
So her return is shrouded in mystery, which is pretty much par for the course when it comes to The Master. Perhaps the mystery of her return will have something to do with the other big returning guest stars for Season 9.
Jemma Redgrave will be back for Season 9 as Kate Lethbridge Stewart, while Kelly Hunter will be back as a member of the Sisterhood of Karn, last seen in “The Night of the Doctor,” joining fellow Karn returnees Clare Higgins and Jaye Griffiths.
No release date has been confirmed just yet for Doctor Who Season 9, but it’s hard to keep from getting excited over all this, particularly since it encourages speculation on just where this story could be headed.
