Disney Officially Announces ‘Frozen 2’
It’s now official: Disney is making Frozen 2, as the company made the announcement official at the annual shareholders meeting in San Francisco.
The sequel had long been a foregone conclusion, considering Frozen made over a billion dollars worldwide, but Disney had still yet to confirm plans for the sequel beyond the animated short, Frozen Fever. But now Frozen 2 is official, as Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck will return to direct, while producer Peter Del Vecho will oversee the project for Walt Disney Animation Studios.
The announcement was made by John Lasseter, chief creative officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios:
“We enjoyed making ‘Frozen Fever’ so much and being back in that world with those characters,” Lasseter said. “Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a sequel and you will be hearing a lot more about it and we’re taking you back to Arendelle. We are so excited about that.”
Disney remained mum on release date and production details, although Josh Gad, who was in attendance for the announcement, is pretty much a given to return as Olaf. Now, if they can get Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez to return as songwriters, they might actually be able to duplicate the success of the original. At the very least, they could have another monster hit soundtrack.
