Directors Guild Awards 2016 Winners List: Alejandro G. Inarritu Makes History
The Oscar race has just received a major shakeup: Alejandro G. Inarritu has won the Directors Guild Award for The Revenant, becoming the first director to win DGA back-to-back, after having won last year for Birdman. He triumphs over Tom McCarthy for Spotlight, Adam McKay for The Big Short, George Miller for Mad Max: Fury Road, and Ridley Scott for The Martian.
But Inarritu was not the only big winner at the DGA, as the awards ceremony also honored the best in documentary film, television and even commercials. And not a moment too soon, considering tonight is the Oscar night of commercials, as Super Bowl 50 airs live, and the ads take center stage! Which is not to take away from the immense achievements of the DGA, as some of these films and shows are the very best of this year. You could make the argument that this win for Inarritu makes him a lock for the Oscar, particularly considering the vast rarity of someone winning the DGA twice consecutively. But with The Big Short earning the PGA, and Spotlight winning the SAG, everything is up in the air. Check out the full list of winners below:
