Common Joins Cast of ‘Suicide Squad’
Common is a recent Academy Award winner for “Glory,” the song he co-wrote with John Legend for the Best Picture-nominated Selma. However, Common is also a hell of an actor too, so it’s pretty great to see that he has a future as a star in the DC Universe.
Common has joined the cast of Suicide Squad in an undisclosed role. He joins a stacked cast for the supervillain team-up movie, as Jared Leto is the Joker, Will Smith is Deadshot, Margot Robbie is Harley Quinn, and Viola Davis is Amanda Waller. The lineup also includes Joel Kinnaman, Cara Delevingne, Adam Beach, Ike Barinholtz, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Scott Eastwood, with possible cameos from Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and Ben Affleck as Batman.
Suicide Squad will focus on the titular group of antiheroes who are given one last chance at redemption from the government, provided they can perform a dangerous mission on their behalf.
Filming on the movie is currently underway in Toronto, as director David Ayer has posted an update from the first official table read, while Jared Leto has also added a pic of his green-haired Joker look from the shoot. This is shaping up to be one of the more exciting summer movies for 2016, as it’s intended to serve as an antihero counterbalance to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is due next spring.
I’m not really sure who Common might play, but I’m interested in hearing suggestions. My bold guess would be Green Lantern John Stewart. It would make sense why Warner Bros. would keep Common’s role so deeply under wraps. But that’s just wild conjecture on my part. It does make a little sense why they’d pick him, since he’s already on the Warner Bros. payroll as an artist on Warner Bros. records. I’m totally on-board with this casting, no matter whom he’s playing, truthfully.
Suicide Squad doesn’t hit theaters until August 5, 2016, but you can add your thoughts and predictions for the movie, and Common’s part in it, in the comments!
