CM Punk Thinks UFC Will Give Him A Second Chance
Former WWE star CM Punk made his debut at UFC 203, and it didn’t exactly go well, as he got systematically taken apart by Mickey Gall in the first round. This led to rumors that Punk would be a one-and-done in the UFC. However, Punk doesn’t feel this will be the case.
In an interview on The MMA Hour, Punk stated that he feels confident UFC president Dana White will give him a second chance in the Octagon.
“If [Dana] wants to kill it, he would have killed it right then,” Punk said concerning his UFC career post-Gall. “I don’t want to say either way what he’s thinking … but yeah, I’m pretty confident that [my next fight] will be in the UFC.”
Although Punk didn’t go into detail, he confirmed that there are at least talks on the table, at the moment.
“[Dana] floated me an idea and we’re kind of going back and forth on it right now,” Punk added.
On the one hand, if Punk turned out to be a draw for UFC 203, then it makes sense to go back to that well again, even though Punk got demolished. On the other hand, will he really mean as much on a second fight? The curiosity factor is gone, and the only way for Punk to really improve his UFC record is to put him up against someone of commensurate skill level, if not an outright tomato can of a fighter. While Punk clearly worked hard to be at his best in his debut fight, I think all the training in the world still pales in comparison to having actually fought before. Most guys who make it to the UFC have amateur fight experience under their belt. But Punk doesn’t, and unless he builds up some, I’m not sure how well he’s going to do being thrown out to the sharks for a second time. With that said, I like Punk, so I’ll always root for the guy. But I can’t pretend I have confidence in a favorable outcome for a second fight.
But what do you think about CM Punk possibly getting another fight in UFC? Sound off in the comments!
