Christopher Miller and Phil Lord Will Direct Han Solo ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff
It’s big news for Hollywood super-team Christopher Miller and Phil Lord!
Miller and Lord have officially been tapped to direct the upcoming Han Solo anthology movie. The standalone will take a look at the early years of the famous Star Wars rogue.
“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with,” Miller and Lord said in a statement. “We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”
Meanwhile, screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan – who co-wrote the scripts for Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and the upcoming The Force Awakens — is pretty excited to be working on the film alongside his son, Jon Kasdan, who’s written for the timeless, star-launching TV drama Freaks and Geeks. In fact, more so than working with one another, the Kasdans seem psyched to be working with Miller and Lord.
“We’re so excited to be working with Chris and Phil, who will bring a fresh new dimension to the Star Wars universe,” said the Kasdans in a statement. “They’re two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.”
Lastly, producer Kathleen Kennedy was beaming about the announcement, saying she’s excited to see what Miller and Lord have in store.
“It’s not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I’m excited to say we’ve found the perfect team to handle the task. Larry and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han’s story.”
Of course, the decision to hire Miller and Lord makes perfect sense, as they’re two of the most prolific directors in Hollywood, and one of its most lucrative pairings. Together, the directing team has helmed Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, and The LEGO Movie. This is without even getting into the other projects on their plate, such as producing FOX’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Last Man On Earth. So, naturally, Disney is looking to a proven team to helm what could prove to be its most lucrative film franchise. That said, I’m still not entirely sold on the idea of this movie in the first place, mostly because I think it’s going to be extremely difficult to find an actor who can capture the roguish charm of a young Harrison Ford. It was such a specific character, and such a specific performance behind it, that I feel the performer and actor are irrevocably linked together, in such a way that seeing any other actor play Han would sort of feel…well, wrong. But I do trust Miller and Lord to bring something special to this project, so it might still prove to be a worthwhile project to pursue after all.
The Han Solo movie is currently scheduled for release on May 25, 2018, so I guess we’ll find out more details once pre-production begins. If nothing else, I’m certainly excited for it, despite my reservations.
But what do you think? Are you excited about this movie? Is a young Han Solo movie even a good idea? Who should play the young Han? Sound off in the comments!
