Chase McNary Was Almost ‘The Bachelor’ – No, Really

Each season of The Bachelorette features the producers having multiple men sign contracts to potentially become The Bachelor. However, it still comes as a surprise to them when the bigwigs in charge eventually go with someone else. Such was the case for The Bachelorette second runner-up, Chase McNary.

Similar to other contenders in past seasons, Chase went through the entire process, negotiating a deal to be the new Bachelor, signing a contract, and informing family and friends that he was probably going to be gone for a few months filming the new season. However, that didn’t exactly come to pass, as the producers ended up going with two-time Bachelorette runner-up and Bachelor In Paradise favorite Nick Viall for the lead role. Needless to say, Chase wasn’t thrilled.

“I went through the negotiations, I accepted the offer, I signed the contract,” Chase stated, in an interview with Us Weekly. “I talked to my family friends about being the Bachelor. It was the Monday before they announced it that they told me I wasn’t the Bachelor. So I found out with the rest of the world that it was Nick.”

Of course, Chase thought at least that his only competition was fellow Bachelorette favorite Luke Pell. He had no idea that Nick was in the running.

“Inherently, I thought it was going to be Luke,” he said. “When I found out I wasn’t the Bachelor, I thought it was going to be Luke. I think Luke thought it was going to be me. And we both at the same time found out it was going to be Nick.”

Honestly, I’m glad it wasn’t Chase. He made it to JoJo Fletcher’s final three, and hardly made an impression of any kind outside of his elimination. I think he probably would have been a blander Bachelor than Ben Higgins and Chris Soules put together. If anything, I feel like the producers were hedging their bets by having multiple potential Bachelors in their back pocket, in the event that their first choice passed. Even if it hadn’t been Nick, it would have been Luke before it was Chase. With that said, Chase is apparently single now, so best of luck to him on his search for love, presuming that’s something he’s doing right now.
