Channing Tatum Exits ‘X-Men’ Spinoff Movie ‘Gambit’

A major change is in store for the X-Men franchise.

Channing Tatum has exited the upcoming X-Men spinoff titled Gambit, which was scheduled to start filming in October from a script by Josh Zetumer (the RoboCop remake) and direction by Rise of the Planet of the Apes helmer Rupert Wyatt. But now? The future of the film is completely up in the air. To say 20th Century Fox was blindsided by this is an understatement, as the studio is still in the process of screen-testing actresses for the lead female role, with SPECTRE star Lea Seydoux among the frontrunners for the part.

It’s unknown why, exactly, Tatum bailed on the movie. Was it creative differences? Scheduling conflict? The desire to play a less physical role? It’s hard to know for certain. What makes this particularly complicated, however, is the fact that Tatum was on-board the project as a producer. Will he remain a producer if the movie ends up getting made without him in front of the camera? Or is this a complete break with the project? So many questions, and no answers, at the moment.

The movie was planned to be the closing film in a trio of X-Men movies released in 2016, with Deadpool coming on February 15, to be followed by X-Men: Apocalypse on May 27. Gambit was due to hit theaters on October 7, 2016, but now it’s looking less likely the film will make that release date, unless they manage to find a new Gambit in the next month or so. It’s not impossible, but it’ll be tough to find someone to match Tatum’s star power.
