Cartoon Network Renews 11 Shows, Announces ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Reboot for 2016
Cartoon Network is locking down its programming lineup, and it’s one hell of a roster.
The 2015-2016 season will include 11 shows that Cartoon Network has renewed. Those shows are…
The Amazing World of Gumball
Teen Titans GO!
LEGO NINJAGO: Masters of Spinjitzu
Pokémon the Series: XY
In addition, there will be three major events/specials in the schedule: a crossover between Steven Universe and Uncle Grandpa, a feature-length Regular Show movie, and an Adventure Time miniseries.
But even those major announcements pale in comparison to what Cartoon Network hopes will be a major headline for the coming season: the return of The Powerpuff Girls.
The network is planning a reboot of the fan favorite, set to premiere in 2016, two years after Cartoon Network aired the CGI Powerpuff Girls special. That special, which earned solid reviews and decent ratings, along with a couple of major headlines thanks to the appearance of Ringo Starr, now comes across as Cartoon Network testing the waters to see if there would be any interest in a rebooted Powerpuff Girls. Apparently, they feel there is, so here we are. Presumably, the new series will have the CGI look of the special, although, from a personal standpoint, I’d love a return to a sleeker version of the original animation style. Either way, I’m just stoked my niece will get to grow up in a world that still has the Powerpuff Girls on TV.
Overall, while Cartoon Network is mostly playing it safe with what it renewed, the various specials and events planned for the 2015-2016 season shows that the network is looking to take a few risks with their well-known properties. It’s a solid strategy, since you can go big with a cartoon in ways you can’t with a live-action series. It should be a fun season ahead.
