Box Office: ‘Zootopia’ Conquers ‘Deadpool’ With $73.7M Opening
The reign of Deadpool is over, as Zootopia is now king of the box office jungle.
On the strength of some stellar reviews from both audiences and critics alike, Zootopia debuted with a record $73.7 million, becoming the biggest opening ever for a Disney Animation Studios film. It is also the highest-grossing debut ever for an animated title for the month of March, overtaking the $70.2 million launch of Dr. Suess’ The Lorax back in 2012. But Zootopia is just as big overseas, earning $63.4 million, with a record-smashing $24 million opening in China, the biggest ever for a Disney Animation Studios feature. Zootopia had a head start in many foreign markets, as it began rolling out two weeks ago. Currently, its foreign total is sitting pretty at $158.8 million. With this weekend’s North American numbers, Zootopia currently holds an impressive estimated gross of $232.5 million.
Naturally, this means Zootopia landed at No. 1 at the weekend box office, bringing an end to the nearly month-long reign of Deadpool. Still, the R-rated superhero film is continuing to knock’em dead, surpassing $300 million in North America with its placement at No. 3 this week, just behind No. 2 entry London Has Fallen. In all, it was a healthy week at the box office in terms of the diversity of films in the running for the top spot, as they ran the gamut from action movies to superhero thrillers, family movies to warzone comedies.
On the subject of London Has Fallen, although the movie came in at No. 2 this weekend, it delivered below expectations with $21.7 million. This is considerably less than the first installment in the action film series, as Olympus Has Fallen debuted to $30.4 million in 2013. It was a similarly dismal debut for the new Tina Fey comedy Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, which earned just $7.6 million.
