Box Office: ‘War Room’ and ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Race Is Too Close to Call
Labor Day weekend has resulted in one of the most heated races for the top spot in weeks, as the race is literally too close to call!
Although final numbers are not yet in, Straight Outta Compton is projected to retain the No. 1 spot for its third straight week with $13.2 million. However, the real story here is the impressive box office showing for a small, little-promoted Christian war drama. From directors Alex and Stephen Kendrick, the brothers behind faith-based hits Fireproof and Courageous, War Room scored big with $11.4 million to storm its way to No. 2. In fact, insiders aren’t actually ready to call this race yet, as final numbers are still being tabulated. There’s still a very real possibility that this movie might be No. 1 for Labor Day weekend, come tomorrow.
The sizable gross for War Room places its total at $28 million so far, which is a big success for the Kendrick brothers and for Sony, who spent just $3 million getting this movie made. If it manages to unseat the reigning king at the box office, it could add to the Kendrick brothers’ clout in Hollywood, despite occupying a largely niche demographic with their films. If nothing else, the success of War Room, and similar faith-based successes like Heaven Is For Real and God Is Not Dead, makes the case that there’s a serious demand for these types of movies in Hollywood.
But the strong showing for War Room wasn’t the only big surprise, as quiet drama A Walk in the Woods, starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte, managed to beat Transporter Refueled, an attempted reboot of the Transporter franchise (except with former Game of Thrones star Ed Skrein in place of Jason Statham). A Walk in the Woods landed at No. 3, whereas Transporter Refueled disappointed at No. 5. While final numbers might bump both films up significantly, it’s not expected that their placement on the rankings will change.
