Box Office: ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Passes ‘Titanic’ to Become #2 All-Time Domestically
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is nipping at James Cameron’s heels, as the sci-fi/fantasy epic has now surpassed Titanic to become the #2 highest-grossing film of all-time domestically. In addition, it’s expected to pass Cameron’s Avatar at some point in the next day or two to become the #1 highest-grossing film of all-time in the U.S.
Star Wars remained a phenomenon in its third weekend, with estimates bringing its total domestic gross to $740-$743 million, to put it ahead of the $658.7 million gross for Titanic. The Force Awakens earned around $34.5 million yesterday alone, putting it on track for a weekend gross of $90 million. This gives the film the record for third weekend gross, surpassing Avatar‘s $68.5 million gross in its third weekend in 2010 (the film released in late 2009).
If Star Wars: The Force Awakens fulfills expectations for this weekend’s projections, the movie will have earned an extra $200M+ in one week, which should put it within striking distance of overtaking the $760.5 million record set by Avatar, and in a fraction of the time.
