Box Office: ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Passes $100 Million in Imax Theaters
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has another box office record. The film crossed the $100 million in just 12 days in Imax theaters worldwide.
The Force cannot be stopped!
The movie has yet to open in China one of the biggest box office markets in the world. It opens there Jan. 9.
The performance by Disney’s space saga demolished the previous Imax record set by “Jurassic World,” which hit the $100 milestone in 18 days. The $106 million Imax total represents nearly 10% of the $1.09 billion worldwide haul for “The Force Awakens.”
The movie set Imax records on its opening weekend with $48 million — $30 million in the U.S. and $18 million internationally.
Imax noted that “The Force Awakens” reached $70 million domestically in 11 days, which was nearly three times faster than “Avatar,” which crossed that milestone in 30 days.
The film has reached $36.6 million in international grosses so far at Imax screens.
