Box Office: ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ sings past ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ with $70.3 Million Debut
Pitch Perfect 2 opened with $70.3 million this weekend beating critically-acclaimed Mad Max: Fury Road which bowed with a respectable $44.4 million.
Pitch Perfect 2, starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, earned more than the entire North American run of the original Pitch Perfect which earned $65 million. Furthermore, it already made a profit as it cost $29 million to produce.
Mad Max: Fury Road cost $150 million, so that movie has a bit more to go to make a profit.
Variety reports that it was the “perfect weekend” as the audiences for Pitch Perfect 2 and Mad Max: Fury Road complemented each other. The acapella sequel audience was 75% female and 62% under 25. The fourth movie in the Mad Max franchise had a 70% male audience and 46% under 35.
Meanwhile, Avengers: Age of Ultron had to settle for third place with $38.8 million pushing its domestic total to $372 million. It is now the biggest movie in the U.S. for 2015 and has already grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.
