Box Office: ‘Moana’ Wins Last Weekend Before ‘Rogue One’

It was an extremely close race at the weekend box office, as Disney’s Moana just barely held onto the top spot with $18.8 million to come in at No. 1 for its third consecutive weekend. Coupled with an overseas gross of $23.5 million for the week, Moana is now at a solid $238.8 million worldwide. However, this is almost assuredly the last weekend Moana will claim the No. 1 spot, as next weekend is the long-awaited released of Rogue One: A Star War Story, which is expected to open big.

But for now, Moana is enjoying a narrow victory over the weekend’s new wide release, Office Christmas Party, which earned $17.5 million. Overseas, the comedy grossed $16.3 million for a worldwide opening of $33.9 million. Granted, with a budget of $45 million, this movie is a bit more expensive than you’d probably expect it to be. But prospects are good for the film at least making its money back.

The No. 3 spot belonged to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which raked in $10.8 million to bring its North American total to $199.3 million, with the $200 million threshold expected to be passed sometime today. Worldwide, the Harry Potter spinoff has earned a whopping $680 million so far.

Golden Globe nominee Arrival comes in at No. 4 with $5.6 million, while Doctor Strange rounds out the Top 5 with $4.6 million, comfortably edging out awards contenders such as Nocturnal Animals and Manchester by the Sea.
