Box Office: Melissa McCarthy Is ‘The Boss’ With $23.5 Million, Beats ‘Batman v Superman’
Melissa McCarthy has officially knocked two of DC’s biggest heroes off their perch.
McCarthy’s new comedy, The Boss, came in at No. 1 at the weekend box office with an estimated $23.48 million, just a shade above Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which earned roughly $23.44 million. Despite iffy reviews, The Boss is McCarthy’s third No. 1 opening after Identity Thief and Spy. The movie, co-written by McCarthy and husband Ben Falcone, who directed (his second feature with McCarthy after 2014’s Tammy), cost $29 million to make. Co-starring Kristen Bell, Peter Dinklage and Kathy Bates, The Boss is on the track towards profitability for Universal.
Although it came within just a hair of earning a third weekend at No. 1, Batman v Superman has struggled to maintain the momentum of its record-breaking opening, falling another 54 percent from week two to week three. Its domestic total is now at $296.7 million, although its international gross is a much stronger $486.8 million. Currently, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has earned $783.5 million in less than a month of release.
Among newcomers this week, first-person POV action flick Hardcore Henry debuted softer than expected, earning an estimated $5.1 million to land in fifth place. However, its modest $10 million budget means it doesn’t have nearly as much ground to cover as some of the other major releases set to hit theaters in the next few weeks, such as Disney’s The Jungle Book, or The Huntsman: Winter’s War.
As for other films holding the line, Zootopia remains an absolute juggernaut. In its ninth weekend, the movie came in at No. 3 with $14.4 million domestically. Coupled with its $22.7 million international gross, the movie has now earned $852.5 million to date. It is currently the fifth highest-grossing original animated film of all-time, and the eleventh highest-grossing animated film ever. In fact, Zootopia is only $5 million shy of cracking the Top 10 by nudging past Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out. Meanwhile, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 continues to hold steady in its third weekend, earning $6.4 million to come in at No. 4. Currently, its domestic gross is a healthy $46.7 million.
