Box Office: ‘Hotel Transylvania 2’ Sets Record for September With $47.5 Million Opening
Sony has a huge hit on their hands: Hotel Transylvania 2 has not only opened at No. 1, it’s earned the biggest opening in the history of September, scoring $47.5 million in North America alone.
This is higher than the previous movie to hold that record: the original Hotel Transylvania in 2012! The animated hit opened to $42.5 million three years ago, earning exactly $5 million less than the sequel, which stars Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, and Selena Gomez. Hotel Transylvania 2 is pretty close to recouping its $80 million budget, earning an additional $29.2 million in international ticket sales this weekend thanks to the earnings from from 32 territories in Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
Meanwhile, the Nancy Meyers comedy The Intern, which stars Oscar winners Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, came in at No. 2 with $18.2 million. The movie proved to be a hit with older audiences, as 55 percent of the audience was over the age of 50. This was well ahead of Everest, the IMAX 3D spectacle, which came in below expectations. After limited release last weekend, the film opened in wide release to just $13.1 million this weekend, bringing its 10-day domestic gross to a disappointing $23.1 million. Still, Everest is doing a bit better overseas, earning $33.8 million from 62 markets to bring its worldwide gross to $96.8 million so far. Considering the film was made on a budget of $55 million, Everest is on-track to profitability.
Faring better was the No. 3 placeholder, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, which earned $14 million despite a 54 percent drop in week two. It’s currently sitting at $51.7 million domestically, although its foreign total is a much stronger $121.8 million. Currently, the sequel is enjoying a worldwide gross of $173.5 million so far.
Black Mass rounded out the Top 5, although it seems that pundits declaring this the box office resurgence of Johnny Depp might have been a bit premature. With $11.5 million, the movie dropped 49 percent in its second weekend, which is significantly greater than the usual drop for a movie of this genre. Still, strong word-of-mouth and considerable Oscar buzz for Depp could help this movie have stronger legs than it might otherwise have had.
