Box Office: ‘Ghostbusters’ Earns $46 Million, Beaten By ‘Secret Life of Pets’
The struggle is real for Ghostbusters. Although the critical reviews have been surprisingly solid, the movie was unable to take the top spot at the weekend box office, as The Secret Life of Pets remained the No. 1 movie in the country.
Despite coming in line with expectations, Ghostbusters earned $46 million to land at #2. This would be great if the movie didn’t have a budget that totals $144 million. Still, this is easily the biggest opening ever for director Paul Feig and stars Melissa McCarthy.
With movies like Star Trek Beyond, Ice Age: Collision Course, Jason Bourne and Suicide Squad on the horizon, Ghostbusters will need to maintain strong numbers at the box office, depending largely on good word-of-mouth, in order to have a chance at breaking even. With that said, Sony might still move forward with a sequel, albeit with a much smaller budget, most likely.
As for the big winner at the box office this weekend, The Secret Life of Pets retained the No. 1 spot with $50.6 million in its second weekend. Overseas, the animated comedy earned $50.8 million to bring its total so far to $254 million worldwide. Another major winner this weekend was Finding Dory, which has become the highest-grossing animated film in history at the domestic box office, with $445.5 million. With its $11 million gross, Finding Dory lands at No. 4, one full month into release. It was only just barely bested by The Legend of Tarzan, which continues to hold onto a top five spot in its third weekend at the box office, coming in at No. 3 with $11.1 million.
Rounding out the top five is Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, which earned $7.5 million to put its domestic gross at a healthy $31.3 million. The movie is inching closer and closer to matching its $33 million budget, so this movie might turn a profit yet, provided it gathers a following. We’re in a bit of a comedy drought this summer, so it makes sense that people are turning out to see this film. There aren’t many other options, after all.
