Box Office: ‘Batman v Superman’ Suffers Massive Second Week Drop
Although last weekend was a huge success, the box office numbers showed bad news for Zack Snyder, Warner Bros., and fans of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, as the superhero film suffered a massive 68 percent drop in its second weekend, going from a $166.1 million opening in its first weekend to just $52.4 million in its second. This is one of the biggest week two drops of all-time for a major superhero title.
With that said, Batman v Superman still easily claimed the No. 1 spot. In addition, the movie is still considered one of the biggest superhero success stories of all-time, as it broke a ton of records upon its debut. Not only is the movie the biggest March opening in history domestically, it’s also the biggest superhero opening at the worldwide box office. Hell, despite dropping 67 percent internationally, Batman v Superman has already outperformed the entire box office run of Deadpool so far. In Mexico and Brazil, the epic is now the biggest Warner Bros. release in history. So while the massive second week drop isn’t great news, it isn’t the death knell for the DC Cinematic Universe that some would have fans believing.
The news was far more optimistic for our No. 2 for the weekend: Zootopia grossed $20 million in its fifth weekend to bring its domestic total to a whopping $275.9 million. Factoring in the additional $30 million the film earned overseas, the international total for Zootopia has now reached $511.7 million, to bring its worldwide box office to $787.6 million so far. And Zootopia wasn’t alone in celebrating, as My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 remained strong in its second weekend, dropping only 38 percent to grab the No. 3 spot with $11.1 million.
Faith-based titles rounded out the Top 5, as newcomer God’s Not Dead 2 landed at No. 4 with $8.1 million. While this is less than the $9.2 million debut of the original in March 2014, the movie cost just $5 million to make, so the threshold for success is considerably lower than it would be for most other major releases. By the same token, Miracles From Heaven is hanging in there at No. 5 with $7.6 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic total to an impressive $46.2 million, on a budget of just $13 million.
Unfortunately, fortunes weren’t so bright for two other newcomers: Meet the Blacks, a spoof of The Purge, opened with $4.1 million. This tied the film for No. 8 with the Bleecker Street drama Eye in the Sky, starring Oscar winner Helen Mirren. Although Meet the Blacks is ranked slightly ahead at the moment, that could all change when the final numbers come out later today.
