Box Office: ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ opens with $84.5 million in U.S.
Avengers: Age of Ultron had a massive opening day on Friday grossing $84.5 million, second-biggest ever. This number includes the $27.6 million it made Thursday night. It is still trending to have the biggest opening weekend ever, but it will be close.
The current record for biggest opening day is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 with $91 million. Age of Ultron improved on the first movie’s opening of $80.8 million by 4.5%.
There are a lot of sports distractions this Saturday: the Kentucky Derby, NBA Playoffs and the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight. Age of Ultron needs a big Saturday just like the original Avengers, which currently holds the record for biggest opening weekend. Age of Ultron is still trending in the $200 to $210 million range this weekend, so at the very least it will beat current #2 Iron Man 3 which opened with $174.1 million in May 2015, according to Variety.
