‘Birdman’ Wins Big at Producers Guild Awards 2015 – Full Winners List
Could Birdman now be the Oscar frontrunner?
That seems to be the suggestion, as Birdman upset presumptive frontrunner Boyhood to win at the Producers Guild Awards 2015. The film beat out some intense competition, including its Best Picture Oscar rivals American Sniper, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything and Whiplash, as well as critical favorites Foxcatcher, Gone Girl and Nightcrawler.
The win is big for its Oscar chances, considering the overlap between the guilds and Academy voting membership. In addition, 18 out of the previous 25 PGA winners for Best Theatrical Motion Picture went on to repeat at the Oscars. Could Birdman repeat? If it does, it’ll become the first movie without a Best Film Editing nomination to win Best Picture since 1980’s Ordinary People. So while it’s not impossible, it’s somewhat unlikely. Then again, just two years ago, Argo became the first film since 1989’s Driving Miss Daisy to take Best Picture without a directing nomination. Statistics are meaning less and less in this preferential balloting era.
Of course, Birdman was hardly the only big winner. Oscar snubs The LEGO Movie and Life Itself took home Best Animated Feature and Best Documentary Feature, respectively, while Television awards were handed out to Breaking Bad, Orange Is the New Black and The Voice, just to name a few. In short, it was a strong collection of winners.
