‘America’s Got Talent’ Judge Mel B Admits She Loves Mocking ‘Delusional’ Auditionees
Mel B has never been one to mince words during her stint as a judge on The X Factor UK, The X Factor Australia, and America’s Got Talent. In fact, in a recent interview, she openly admits that being brutally honest is one of her favorite parts of the job, although she does admit that she also hopes to encourage some of the would-be talents.
“I’m just me. I’m just very opinionated. I react to whatever I see. If it’s good, it’s good. If it’s bad, it’s bad. I don’t mince my words,” Mel B told The Guardian. “Hopefully, I’m somewhat encouraging in the midst of it all. I love doing those shows. You get to watch a star being born.”
But she does point out how fun it is to call out “delusional” contestants.
“You get to laugh your pants off at people who are delusional,” Mel B laughed. “You get to be part of a rollercoaster ride with somebody’s life. It’s great.”
On the one hand, I can see why Mel B would assume certain contestants are just having a laugh at the show’s expense. There are plenty of contestants on both The X Factor and America’s Got Talent who simply use the show to get their fifteen minutes of fame, with no intention of ever taking the competition seriously. But it does seem a bit cruel to take joy in mocking people who are genuinely pursuing their dream. Sure, if they don’t have the talent to make it, tell them so. Some people could really use the wake-up call. However, I’m not sure laughing at them really helps. That said, I guess it’s what viewers do when delusional people are onscreen, so I suppose the only difference is that Mel B is doing the laughing in person. Still, it seems kind of harsh to be taking glee in all this.
