America’s Got Talent 2016 Results #1: Who Advanced to the Semifinals? (VIDEO)

Welcome to the live blog and recap for the America’s Got Talent 2016, “Results Show 1”! Judges Howie Mandel, Mel B, Heidi Klum and Simon Cowell join host Nick Cannon on the biggest nationwide talent search of the summer!

Last night was the premiere of the live shows, as the quarterfinals kicked off with the following acts:

Daniel Joyner, Singer
Deadly Games, Knife Thrower Duo

Jayna Brown, Singer
Jon Dorenbos, Magician
Laura Bretan, Opera Singer

Naturally, some did better than others, with Laura Bretan earning a standing ovation to close the show, Outlawz earning the first buzzer of the lives, and Tape Face winning over the audience with a routine that involved the judges! But those were just some of the acts who made waves last night.

But for now, let us know who you think will advance to the semifinals and who will go home in the comments below! And keep it locked right here, as I’ll be updating with commentary, results, and videos as soon as they become available!

-AGT winners Paul Zerdin and Mat Franco will also be performing on tonight’s show. Should be a fun hour!

-We kick off with judge introductions and a brief recap of last night’s show, with comments from the contestants before and after their performances. I love how Dorothy wanted to make Nick proud because he got her here with his Golden Buzzer. Such a cute moment. I also got a big kick out of the awestruck, spellbound reactions of the other contestants backstage watching Laura’s performance on the screen.

-The Dunkin’ Donuts Save is back again this season, as Nick reveals the three acts that are on the bubble. They’re all fighting for that last semifinal spot, so the Dunkin’ Save votes are crucial.

DEADLY GAMES is in the Bottom Three!

HARA is in the Bottom Three!

LORI MAE HERNANDEZ is in the Bottom Three!

Howie feels any of these acts could have won in a different season, so he’s shocked that we’ll be losing one of them tonight. He makes a crack about how each act represents the current political landscape, as we’ve got the chairman of the DNC (Lori Mae Hernandez), the Russians (Deadly Games), and the Asian Free Trade (Hara). As for my thoughts, I’m not surprised about Deadly Games, but I thought Hara and Lori Mae were shoo-ins, so this is kind of a shock, to me. That said, as much as I enjoyed her routine last night, I think I’d rather have Hara stick around. I feel like he was somewhat shortchanged by having gone so early in last night’s show. Then again, I suppose you could make the argument that placement in the show order shouldn’t matter if you’re memorable.

-Back from break, as we get some silliness in the Dunkin’ Lounge, and I never noticed how many of last night’s finalists are teenagers. Granted, the majority are in Musicality. But still, this is a super young group.

-Nick calls Musicality and Dorothy Williams to center stage. One act will advance to the semifinals, the other will be going home. The result…

MUSICALITY advances to the semifinals!

-The teens of Musicality have the most wonderful reaction to advancing, but none more remarkable than conductor Michael, whose jaw is practically on the floor. Mel B congratulates them on making it through, noting the connection they inspire in viewers. Could this be a dark horse act to get to the finals? I certainly enjoy them, so I’m not the least bit bothered by getting the opportunity to see more from them.

-Nick calls Jayna Brown and Laura Bretan to the stage, although he doesn’t state “One of you will be leaving, and the other will be going home.” So I’m guessing both girls are going through. The result…

JAYNA BROWN and LAURA BRETAN both advance to the semifinals!

-The girls talk about how amazing this feels. Simon, meanwhile, says he nearly had a heart attack thinking that one of these two singers was about to go home. He encourages both girls to keep pushing themselves and making songs their own, before offering his congratulations to both of them.

-Back from break with an awesome video package with Paul Zerdin, Mat Franco and Terry Fator recalling what it was like to win America’s Got Talent, and how nerve-wracking the winning moment was. We also check-in with some people who came close to winning but just missed out, like Piff the Magic Dragon! I adored this package, particularly Terry’s story about meeting Nancy Reagan and telling her he voted for her husband, only for her to respond, “And I voted for you.” I also find Mat geeking out about seeing a ticket with his name on it to be genuinely endearing. I love these little packages that let us check in with past contestants and see what they’re up to, and to illustrate that the AGT process really does change lives, even if not every contestant or winner becomes a household name.

PAUL ZERDIN returns to the AGT stage!

-Paul is back for a performance, and he’s brought Sam with him! I love Sam, even though the baby sound of his voice is strange. It’s not exactly annoying or anything, it just sounds different from what you’d think a puppet like that would sound. Of course, now I’m just picking nits. This was a funny routine that include Sam providing his Simon Cowell impression, flirting with the female judges. He closes with a classy bit of well-wishing to the contestants this season. Funny enough, I found the Paul throwing to commercial with Nick Cannon as his dummy to be more entertaining than his actual act, which I already enjoyed quite a bit. (What can I say? I’m a sucker for felt puppets)

MAT FRANCO returns to the AGT stage!

-Mat does what, at first, appears to be a simple sleight of hand routine with a deck of cards. But the wow factor is upped considerably with the inclusion of a video screen behind him. Each card he flips out of his hands ends up in the constellation of stars behind him. He then starts snapping cards out of his fingers like it’s going out of style. At the end, he shoots confetti from his hands. The judges are quick to stand up, although Simon takes a long time in doing so. He really didn’t seem particularly impressed by this. Granted, I’ve seen better from Mat, but I still thought this was pretty cool. After the performance, Mat offers advice to the remaining contestants, and…well, that’s it. I wonder if this was somehow rushed? Because they seemed quick to get through Mat’s entire segment.

-Nick calls Outlawz and Daniel Joyner to the stage. The result…

OUTLAWZ and DANIEL JOYNER are both eliminated from AMERICA’S GOT TALENT 2016!

-It’s a cruel way of dispensing the result, but I feel like both acts knew it was coming.

-Nick calls Sila Sveta, Tape Face and Jon Dorenbos to the stage. The result…

JON DORENBOS advances to the semifinals!

Jon celebrates while Nick tells the other two acts to remain onstage, since the results aren’t quite finished yet. I’m stoked that Jon advanced, because I was worried we might not get any strong magic acts this year in the semifinals. But I feel like Jon is a potential winning act. Hell, he’s been getting play on ESPN with his AGT segments. And while that’s due to his being a former Philadelphia Eagle, they wouldn’t show any of it if he hadn’t actually been as good as he was.

Anyway, the next result…

TAPE FACE advances to the semifinals!

SILA SVETA is eliminated from AMERICA’S GOT TALENT 2016!

-Nick asks Tape Face what he has to say for himself, in response. Naturally, he says nothing. Part of me wants to see Tape Face win just to see if he’ll actually talk. Or if he’d break character from sheer joy. However, the larger part of me never wants to know what he sounds like. I love the inherent silliness of his act, and the mystery surrounding who he is. Who knows? Maybe he’ll become the first AGT winner to win his season without ever having uttered a single word.

-We have three acts left, but only two will advance to the semifinals. One act will be saved by America with the Dunkin’ Donuts live save vote, while the other will come down to the judges. Lori Mae Hernandez gets the biggest reaction of the three, so I’d be surprised if she didn’t go through to the next round. But I guess we’ll see. As a reminder, it’s all down to Hara, Deadly Games, and Lori Mae Hernandez. The result…

LORI MAE HERNANDEZ is saved by America! She advances to the semifinals!

Lori Mae breaks down in tears, and thanks America for giving her a second chance. I like Lori Mae, so I can’t front on this result. That said, I hope Hara is the second act to go through. Deadly Games is a good act, but I don’t know what else they can do. There are knives and a spinning wheel and the possibility of a gruesome accident if something goes wrong. But does the act get any bigger than this? Or have we seen their entire bag of tricks?

Anyway, it all comes down to the judges’ vote now…

-It’s between Deadly Games and Hara. The judges have deliberated. In the event of a tie vote, we refer back to America’s vote to determine who will advance to the semifinals.

Heidi says it’s a tough choice, but she’s going with her gut. Heidi votes to save Deadly Games!

Mel B loves both acts, but she felt Hara took her to a mystical world. Mel B votes to save Hara!

Simon notes that he watched both acts back last night, and while Hara was good, Deadly Games was the best act of its type he’s ever seen. Simon votes to save Deadly Games!

Howie is back-and-forth, and he has no idea who to choose. He follows his gut and feels he just has to save Hara. Howie votes to save Hara!

Nick reads the act that received the most votes from America last night…

DEADLY GAMES advances to the semifinals!

HARA is eliminated from AMERICA’S GOT TALENT 2016!

-Sad to see Hara go, but I guess having a danger act still in the running means we’ll have a greater breadth of variety in the semifinals. Well done to both acts.

-Next week, another twelve acts compete for a spot in the semifinals. They are…

Calysta Bevier, Singer
FLIP, Dance Group
Kadie Lynn Roberson, Singer/Guitarist
Moya Angela, Singer
Ryan Stock & AmberLynn, Sideshow Duo
Sal Valentinetti, Jazz Singer
Sofie Dossi, Contortionist/Aerialist
Sos and Victoria Petrosyan, Quick Change Duo
Steven Brundage, Magician
The Clairvoyants, Mentalist Duo
ThroWings, Acrobat Duo
Viktor Kee, Juggler

Until next week, thanks for reading!
