American Idol XIV – Live Blog and Recap – Hollywood Week No. 3 (VIDEO)
Welcome to the live blog and recap for American Idol 14, “Hollywood Week No. 3”! The search continues for the next American Idol!
Tonight, Hollywood Week continues as Group Round rages on! Will Alexis Granville be able to continue following last week’s cliffhanger? Or will Sal’s Gals have to forge on without her? And which artists will survive Group Round and advance to the next solo round? It’s all on the line tonight!
Keep it locked right here, as I’ll be updating the post with live, running commentary and analysis, along with videos of tonight’s proceedings.
Let’s get this show on the road!
-We open with the judges discussing the make-or-break importance of group day, while the contestants are shown stressing out backstage. We then go right into last week’s cliffhanger, as Alexis Granville passes out backstage following what is being called an “anxiety attack”. The judges give them time to recover, but even if she knocks it out of the ballpark, I don’t know how they can seriously put her through after all this.
-The group is SAL VALENTINETTI, ALEXIS GRANVILLE, JAX, KELLY KIME and KAITLYN GOOD. But they sing “Drive By” by Train, and it’s pretty good. Their harmonies are on point, and even Alexis brings the goods. However, when it comes time for the judges to make their decision, they screw around with Kelly by having her step forward and then step back. Ultimately, the only two people called forward are Alexis and Jax. And they’re the only two going forward. NO! NOT SAL!

SAL VALENTINETTI, KELLY KIME and KAITLYN GOOD are eliminated from AMERICAN IDOL XIV!
-Both Sal and Kelly take it in good spirits, although Sal is a bit miffed that Alexis got through. Still, he’s a pretty good sport, and even asks J-Lo about getting that dinner together. I’m gonna miss him a lot.
-Meanwhile, Emily Brooke has food poisoning, so she’ll have to muscle her way through this performance if she wants to advance.
3 TO 1 BRUNETTES
-The group consists of RILEY BRIA, KERI LYNN ROCHE, EMILY BROOKE, and JAKE BLACK. They sound terrific though on “With A Little Help With My Friends” by The Beatles (although it’s the Joe Cocker version). They all sail through pretty easily.

-The group consists of CODY FRY, RAYVON OWEN, PIPER JONES and KELLYEANNE RODGERS. They sing “Since U Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson, and it’s really harmonious and in sync, as it should be since, as they reveal, they all went to school together. Man, talk about a small world. It’s a very good vocal, particularly from Rayvon, who dips into his falsetto and lets it all out. Great stuff.

-We return from break with a group called Team Yup, led by TIFFANY STRINGER, getting cut. Harry tells them that the only compliment he can pay them is that they made it this far at all. Honestly, from what little we hear of their rendition of “Love Runs Out,” Harry is right on the money.
-This group consists of ADANNA DURU, CINDY MASLOV, DENISE NATOLI, CAMILLE PERUTO…who all somehow have the exact same voice. I didn’t think a single one of them did a good job of standing out, as their version of “I Want You Back” was an absolute mess. Apparently, Adanna and Cindy were beefing

-I could have taken or left any of these girls. If my eyes were closed, I don’t think I would have been able to tell any of these ladies apart.
-The name stands for Ladies Keep Your Clothes On, and it features DANIEL SEAVEY, SAVION WRIGHT, QAASIM MIDDLETON and TREVOR DOUGLAS. Daniel does his best, and it’s actually pretty good, but I still don’t really get it yet with him. They sing “Story of My Life,” and I think the only two who do a noteworthy job are Trevor and Savion, which is a shame because I absolutely love Qaasim. But he just oversings it here, I think. Still, their harmonies are tight, and Qaasim adds some scatting and beatboxing that I really enjoyed. Ultimately, the judges really enjoyed it, even the name.
DANIEL SEAVEY, SAVION WRIGHT, QAASIM MIDDLETON and TREVOR DOUGLAS all advance to the next round!
-Daniel does have serious potential, but I think it’s WAY too soon for him to be here. His voice is still too volatile for him to control, since he’s apparently still going through puberty. I just never know what I’m getting with that kid. And my opinion virtually changes on Qaasim by the week. That said, I still think it’s better to have him here than not to, since no one else is really offering the kind of style and showmanship he’s got.
TEAM NO SLEEP
-So HOLLYWOOD ANDERSON is asleep on the floor, having gotten no sleep the night before from having been up flirting with all of the women in Hollywood. What’s worse is that he volunteered to be team captain, so he’s essentially letting them all down. LAUREL TAYLOR TAUNTON takes charge and gets on Hollywood’s ass, working the group to the bone. She even calls out AMBER KELECHI for not harmonizing correctly. She says she wasn’t trying to be hard, but it was necessary.
-We then see a trio of groups that feature ALEXIS GOMEZ, LOREN LOTT and QUENTIN ALEXANDER standing out from the crowd. They are all put through. However, Loren is disappointed to learn that the competition continues directly into tomorrow, since she assumed they were going to get a day off. I can’t quite put my finger on why, but I don’t like her.

-And we’re back with Team No Sleep…
TEAM NO SLEEP (CONTINUED)
The group features HOLLYWOOD ANDERSON, LAUREL TAYLOR TAUNTON, AMBER KELECHI, MONICA MENDOZA and a fifth girl named Brittany. They sing “Grenade,” and it’s a total mess. Hollywood is really dropping the ball in this competition. I don’t think I could be more disappointed with him if he were actually trying to disappoint me. Still, he ends up doing just enough to make it through, as the judges are now inexplicably cutting them slack for the difficult of putting a group performance together in such a short amount of time.

LAUREL TAYLOR TAUNTON, AMBER KELECHI and BRITTANY are eliminated from AMERICAN IDOL XIV!
-Laurel is furious, saying she really didn’t like her group at all. I don’t really blame her, since she worked her ass off while Hollywood flirted, and he made it through. But work ethic isn’t everything. Sometimes, there’s just an ineffable “something” about certain contestants that makes it difficult to let them go.
-We open on LOVEY JAMES, KORY WHEELER, JESS LAMB and KARLA DAVIS singing “All About That Bass,” and it’s better in harmonies than it is individually. Lovey James disappointed me somewhat, falling into the wrong key. Both Jess and Kory really impressed me though. So, naturally, Kory gets cut.

-And we move on…
–ROCKY PETER and teammate RICH TUORTO were at odds the entire night over lyrics, causing friction in the group, which also includes TRENT ANCIRA and TANYA MACKENNA. They sing “Come and Get It,” and it’s kind of a mess. Ultimately, the only person to get through is Tanya Mackenna, meaning we say goodbye to Rocky Peter. He’s stone-faced as he fights back tears, recalling that he promised his mother his life would change. A real heartbreaker, but far from the only one, as CINDY-JO SCHOLER

-We then move on to…
-Last night, HEATHERLE SPIRES tried to leave the group, saying if she couldn’t change groups, she wouldn’t sing the next day. However, she can’t find another group, so she has no choice but to reunite with the group, which includes SARINA-JOI CROWE, ERIKA DAVID, and ADRIANNA SIMON. They sing “Grenade” and it’s pretty impressive, even if I would rather never hear this song again after tonight. Of particular note is Sarina, who really brings it. I guess getting rejected three times makes you really hungry to go through.

-At the very least, Keith compliments Heatherle on having a beautiful voice. But Heatherle is all tears, just the same.
MARK ANDREW’S CREW
–ALEX SHIER, VANESSA ANDREA, KATHERINE WINSTON and MARK ANDREW sing “With A Little Help From My Friends,” and I think it’s one of the better group performances so far. Katherine sounds wonderful in her upper register, and this song is perfect for Mark. However, the group is separated when everyone makes it through except for Vanessa.
-We follow it up with a montage of friendships being broken up through eliminations. The big takeaway here is that JELLY JOSEPH and TIONNE WATKINS are among those advancing, as is MADDIE WALKER. However, JACKIE NESE isn’t nearly as lucky, ending up cut. But she’s happy that her friends made it through, at least.
GARRETT MILES and his group sing “Gone” by The Band Perry, although we never identify the girls because they’d rather focus on talking with Garrett’s dad backstage. Unfortunately, it doesn’t end up making a difference since, surprisingly, Garrett gets cut.
GARRETT MILES is eliminated from AMERICAN IDOL XIV!
-He gets a standing ovation from the other competitors on his way out. I’m going to miss him.
-The pressure is becoming too much for JOEY COOK, who struggles with the lyrics. Meanwhile, SHANNON BERTHIAUME‘s alarm doesn’t go off, causing her to be late. However, the girls get it together in time for their performance. They sing “Somebody to Love” by Queen, and Joey forgets the words but covers it up by singing, “I totally didn’t forget the words / it’s just your imagination.” Have I mentioned how much I love this woman? Shannon also turns in one of her best, non-shouty vocals, to boot. And group leader NAOMI TATSUOKA wraps it all up in a pretty bow, making this my favorite group performance of the night, even though we don’t hear note one from KRISTA BETTEVY. J-Lo praises the group for bringing it all together so well, and Harry praises Joey for covering her flub with as much skill as she did, since “The show must go on.” The judges make their decision, and all four will be going through. Too bad they never end up identifying or showing a solo from the fourth group member.
NAOMI TATSUOKA, JOEY COOK, SHANNON BERTHIAUME, and KRISTA BETTEVY advance to the next round!
-And that’s a wrap, as solo rounds start tomorrow!
What did you think of tonight’s show? Did the judges make the right call? Sound off in the comments, and stay tuned for videos! Until tomorrow, thanks for hanging out!
